OCEAN AVENGER DRILLING
W8x19 STEEL BEAM
W8x19 Steel beam – Time Study and Test
General
Observations
-
We were able
to get onto a customer's machine to conduct the trial during
their lunch hour, so we had no opportunity to refine our
approach prior to running each test.
-
The closest sized beam we had
available to test was a W8x18".
-
Web height = 8-1/8" (210mm)
-
Thickness = 1/4" (6mm)
-
Y gauge was 2-3/8" (60mm)
-
X gauge was 2-3/4" (70mm)
-
No. of holes drilled = 98
-
The machine was running at
85% of cycle duty. We did not change this for the test.
-
A new
operator on the customer’s machine had also unfortunately filled
up the coolant tank with undiluted coolant. The coolant should
be diluted 20:1. The foaming coolant on the trail videos is not
the normal situation and will not occur with the correct
dilution.
-
Time taken to drill the 98
holes was 18min 40sec (11.4 seconds per hole)
-
In a regular
production situation, the client will refine a more suitable
approach based on the products they are running. Improvements that would
reduce the overall time taken are as follows
-
run the machine at 100%
cycle
-
use an extended length
drill bit - this will shorten the drill approach and
retraction cycle times
-
increase the approach and
retraction speeds - this is easily done by an operator in
the Siemens / Peddimat MDLB screen.
-
With these improvements the
reduction in the drilling time could be as much as 1-2 seconds
per hole, with an overall reduction in the part processing time
of somewhere between 2 - 4 minutes
